The Oklahoma City Energy FC , shortly Oklahoma City Energy or just OKC Energy is an American football franchise the USL Championship in Oklahoma City , Oklahoma .

history

founding

On July 2, 2013, Prodigal LLC, which is led by businessman Bob Funk, Jr., received the rights to a franchise in the USL Pro. This enabled the company to prevail against the competitor Sold Out Strategies, a group of investors led by Brad Lund. Lund had recently bought the rights to the USL PDL franchise Oklahoma City FC and also wanted to put a team in the USL Pro. However, this did not happen and so the company Sold Out Strategies is a franchise in the NASL .

On December 20, 2013, a partner from the Major League Soccer was found with Sporting Kansas City . As the first coach, the Dane Jimmy Nielsen could be committed. Nielsen was still active as a goalkeeper for Sporting Kansas City until the end of 2013.

First season

Oklahoma City Energy's first game was on March 8, 2014 against the University of Nebraska Omaha national team . Oklahoma won 1-0 here. The first competitive game in the USL Pro was on April 5, 2014 against Orange County Blues FC . Here, too, the team around coach Jimmy Nielsen was able to prevail 2-0. After a loss to LA Galaxy II and a win against Arizona United, a series of six losses followed. Overall, the team achieved 9 wins at the end of the regular season, but also suffered 5 draws and 14 defeats. In the end it was only enough for 10th place and thus not for a play-off qualification. In the US Open Cup , Energy defeated the NPSL team Tulsa Athletics 2-0 and thus reached the third round. There they lost to Arizona United. The first goalscorer in Oklahoma City Energy history was Kyle Greig.

Stadion

Oklahoma City Energy is planning to build its own soccer stadium. It will initially hold 7,000 spectators and expand to 20,000. In the 2014 season, the home games were played at the Pribil Stadium, which is located on the grounds of the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School. In 2015 they switched to the Taft Stadium. This stadium has a capacity of 7,500 and is administered by the Oklahoma City Public School District.
