Philadelphia Union II ( Bethlehem Steel Football Club until late 2019 ) is a franchise of the professional football - league USL Championship based out of Chester , Pennsylvania .
The team, founded in 2015, has played in the second-rate USL since the 2016 season. The franchise is owned by Keystone Sports & Entertainment and is the farm team of the Philadelphia Union MLS franchise , which is also owned by Keystone Sports & Entertainment. For the 2020 season, the team named itself in Philadelphia Union II and gave itself a new logo.
history
founding
On October 27, 2015, the investor group Keystone Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the Major League Soccer franchise Philadelphia Union , officially presented its new team, Bethlehem Steel FC. The name is reminiscent of the former Bethlehem Steel FC soccer team , which was active from 1907 to 1930. This was determined in an internet vote.
Bethlehem Steel FC is a USL partner and thus the farm team of the MLS Philadelphia Union franchise . Furthermore, both franchises are run by the same owner. Philadelphia players may be sent to Bethlehem Steel FC and are eligible to play on both teams. For the 2020 season , the franchise was renamed Philadelphia Union II and gave itself a new logo.
First season
Bethlehem Steel FC started its preparation on March 6, 2016. The first game was played against the soccer team of Syracuse University and won 5-0. The first competitive game in the USL took place on March 25, 2016 and was won 1-0 against FC Montréal . The franchise's first goalscorer in a league game was Fabian Herbers .
Stadion
The home games were played in the first three seasons at the Goodman Stadium in Bethlehem. The 16,000-seat stadium is located on the Murray H. Goodman campus of Lehigh University . The team's training takes place on the training grounds, which are located adjacent to Talen Energy Stadium in Chester , Pennsylvania . Since the 2019 season , the home games have been played in the Talen Energy Stadium, where the Philadelphia Union also plays its home games in Major League Soccer .
