The Charlotte Eagles are an American soccer franchise based in Charlotte , North Carolina .

The Eagles were founded in 1991 and play in the USL League Two , the fourth highest division in the US league system . Home games are played at the Sports Splex at Matthews, which is located in Matthews, North Carolina .

The Eagles are part of Missionary Athletes International (MAI), a Christian sports organization that spreads the message of Christianity through sport . With the Southern California Seahorses there is a sister club in the USL Premier Development League .

history

The club first played in the A League (later USL First Division ) but had to go down a league for financial reasons. The club's biggest rivals are the Atlanta Silverbacks from the North American Soccer League and Charleston Battery from the USL First Division.

In the 2000 and 2005 seasons, the Eagles were the winners of the play-offs. In the 2006 season, the Charlotte Eagles reached the play-off final and lost to the Richmond Kickers .

The team has played in the American Division of the USL Professional Division since 2011 . At the end of the 2014 season they switched to the USL PDL.
