The Indy Eleven are an American football - Franchise of the USL Championship in Indianapolis , Indiana .

The team was founded in 2013 and played in the NASL , the second highest division in the USA , between 2014 and 2017 . Since the 2018 season, the team has been playing in the USL after a change within the second division system .

history

On January 16, 2013, NASL announced that an expansion team from Indianapolis would join the league for the 2014 season. The franchise is owned by Ersal Ozdemir, CEO of Keystone Group LLC. He named Peter Wilt as the club's first president and general manager. Wilt was President and General Manager of Chicago Fire from 1996 to 2005 .

To choose the name, a Name the Team contest was held. On April 25, 2013 it was announced that the name Indy Eleven has the most votes and the team will therefore bear this name. The logo was also introduced with the name. The team was able to sell 7,000 season tickets for its first season, making it the first NASL team to set up a waiting list for season tickets.

On October 1, 2013, Kristian Not , the team's first player, was introduced. Juergen Sommer was signed as the first coach .

2014-2017 North American Soccer League

On April 12, 2014, the team made their season debut against the Carolina RailHawks . The game ended 1-1. On February 5, 2014, the team made their game debut in a friendly against the Vancouver Whitecaps , which was lost 3-2. The spring season 2014 ended Eleven with the ninth and last place in the table. No victory could be achieved. The fall season 2014 went a lot better. The first victory in the history of the franchise was achieved on the first day of play against the Carolina RailHawks. In the end, the team reached 7th place. The team's most successful goalscorer was the former Brazilian international Kléberson with 8 goals .

In the 2014 US Open Cup, Indy Eleven made it to the fourth round with a win against the Dayton Dutch Lions . But there you lost to the Columbus crew after extension.

Also in the second season you could not qualify for the play-offs. Because of this, Tim Hankinson became the new coach.

In 2016, the team won the Spring Championship after a season without defeat.

On January 31, 2017, the franchise announced its application to join Major League Soccer , but failed to prevail against the competition.

Since 2018 - USL Championship

For the 2018 season, the franchise moved from NASL to the also second-rate United Soccer League . Martin Rennie became the new coach . As the 7th of the Eastern Conference they qualified directly for the play-offs, but lost in the first round to eventual champions Louisville City FC .

In the 2019 season they qualified again for the play-offs. In the final of the Eastern Conference, the team again lost to Louisville City.

Stadion

The Eleven play their home games at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. Previously stage was on the Michael A. Carroll campus of Indiana University - Purdue University played. This stadium is now used as an alternate venue in the event that Lucas Oil Stadium is otherwise occupied (the stadium is used by the NFL team Indianapolis Colts ).

In 2019 the club announced that it wanted to build a new stadium with 20,000 seats. This is to become the heart of Eleven Park, which also includes 600 apartments, 14,000 square meters of office space, 9,000 square meters of retail space and a hotel with 200 rooms. At the beginning of 2020 it was announced that the stadium may initially only be built with a (later expandable) capacity of 12,000 seats.

Ownership and Management

The owner of the franchise is Ersal Ozdemir. He is also the owner and CEO of Keystone Construction Corporation , a construction company based in Indianapolis. Ozdemir continues to be a spokesperson and member of many organizations.

The first President and General Manager of Indy Eleven was Peter Wilt. Wilt was President and General Manager of Chicago Fire from 1997 to 2005 . He then was CEO of the Chicago Red Stars . After a year he moved to the board of directors of the indoor soccer club Milwaukee Wave . In 2010 he founded the Chicago Riot indoor soccer team , which was disbanded after a season in the Major Indoor Soccer League . Wilt joined Ozdemir in late 2012 as he prepared to found Indy Eleven.

In January 2016, Wilt retired as President of Indy Eleven. Jeff Belskus then took over this position , who had previously acted as CEO of Hulman & Company , the owner of Indianapolis Motor Speedway .
