Diego Tardelli Martins (born May 10, 1985 in Santa Bárbara d'Oeste ), better known as Diego Tardelli , is a Brazilian football player .

Club career

Career start in Brazil

In his youth, Diego Tardelli played for FC Santos with later stars like Diego and Robinho . After a short-term deal with União Barbarense , he was signed by São Paulo FC and started playing for the professional team for the first time in 2003. Right from the start he was able to establish himself there in spite of big names in the team and in the first three years of his career he played over 70 league games. Tardelli ran alongside Grafite , Júlio Baptista , Luís Fabiano and Kaká , among others , but could not win a championship with São Paulo. The team achieved successes at the state championships in São Paulo and the Copa Libertadores in 2005 .

Lending business with Seville, São Caetano and Eindhoven

In January 2006, the Brazilian striker was loaned to the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla , but could not score there in 13 missions. This was followed by another one-year loan deal with AD São Caetano , where Tardelli should meet his former coach Émerson Leão . But even when he got back in Brazil, he couldn't convince. It wasn't until his third loan, the successful Dutch club PSV Eindhoven , that the striker nearly returned to his old form in 2006/07. On the offensive, he again played with well-known players such as Jefferson Farfán or the retired world star Patrick Kluivert at PSV and was able to win the Dutch championship in 2007 . The Brazilian also played in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League and only failed with Eindhoven in the quarter-finals against eventual finalists Liverpool FC .

Return to Brazil

After his time in Eindhoven, Diego Tardelli returned to São Paulo FC. Although he was only able to contribute one goal in 20 league games, his team won the national championship. In 2008 the striker then moved to league rivals Flamengo Rio de Janeiro and celebrated with this club winning the state championship of Rio de Janeiro and the Taça Guanabara . On August 3, 2008, he broke his arm in a game against Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte and was injured for several months. For the new season Tardelli moved to Atlético Mineiro in January 2009 , where he should find his old scoring threat again and was the top scorer in the first year for the new club in the Brazilian first division. Just like Adriano , Tardelli scored 19 goals. In the following season 2010 he won the national championship of Minas Gerais with his team .

Moved to Russia and Qatar

In March 2011, the Brazilian striker followed the wake-up call for money and moved to Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia. The club was taken over shortly before by the billionaire Suleiman Abusaidowitsch Kerimow . In addition to him, his compatriots Roberto Carlos , João Carlos and Jucilei da Silva were also committed. For Tardelli, however, the time at Makhachkala was by no means crowned with success. The striker failed to score a single goal in 13 games and moved to al-Gharafa Sports Club in the Emirate of Qatar in January 2012 . With the club he won the Emir of Qatar Cup in 2012. Tardelli's coach at al-Gharafa was his compatriot and former international Paulo Silas .

Return to Brazil again

In February 2013, Diego Tardelli returned to Atlético Mineiro. In the meantime, two-time FIFA world footballer Ronaldinho also played there . Nevertheless, Mineiro only reached eighth place in the table in 2013 after the runner-up in the previous year. Tardelli contributed a total of seven goals in 26 games. Much more successful were the appearances in the state championship of Minas Gerais, which the club was able to win. However, the results were dwarfed by winning the Copa Libertadores 2013 . The Brazilian club achieved this for the first time in its 100-year history. In the final Mineiro defeated the Paraguayan club Olimpia after a 2-0 defeat in the first leg in the second leg with 2-0 and then 4-3 on penalties. Tardelli scored six goals throughout the competition and was instrumental in this success. Only his strike partner could score one more hit. For Diego Tardelli personally it was already the second win of the most important South American club competition.

Four years in China and returning

In January 2015, Tardelli moved to Shandong Luneng Taishan in the Chinese Super League . In his first year he was able to win the Chinese FA Super Cup with the club . This should remain his only success in China. With 49 goals in 95 competitive games in his luggage, Tardelli returned to Brazil after the end of the 2018 season. Here he signed a three-year contract with Grêmio Porto Alegre . In December of that year, Tardelli asked for the early termination of his contract, which Gremio followed.

In February 2020 Atlético Mineiro announced that they had signed Tardelli for the third time.

National team

During his first successful period at Atlético Mineiro , Tardelli completed a total of five games for the Brazilian national soccer team in 2009 and 2010 under national coach Dunga .
