Suleiman Abusaidowitsch Kerimow ( Russian Сулейман Абусаидович Керимов ; born March 12, 1966 in Derbent , Dagestani ASSR ) is a Russian member of parliament and oligarch . According to dpa (2008), he was one of the richest men in the world with assets of US $ 17.5 billion (No. 35). Forbes estimated him at only $ 3.1 billion for 2009 , placing him in 1966 worldwide. In 2011 he became known to the world as a major investor in the Anzhi Makhachkala football club and, according to Forbes, was ranked 118th with $ 7.8 billion.

Life

Kerimow belongs to the Caucasian ethnic group of Lesgier . In 1989 he graduated from the State University of Dagestan with a degree in economics and then worked in an electronics company in his home region.

He stands behind the investment company Nafta Moscow , which had bought in several banks and also in Yukos , and was considered the largest shareholder in the fifth largest silver producer in the world (and at the same time largest Russian silver exporter) Polymetall , which went public in the 1st quarter of 2007. According to press reports in June, he appeared to be attempting an exit from Russia and buying shares in Deutsche Bank and other Western financial institutions on a large scale. For him, investing in the west should be less risky, a Moscow financial expert told the Kommersant . According to the newspaper, Kerimow held around three percent of Deutsche Bank at the end of 2007. In addition, he has acquired around one percent each in the banks UBS, Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse. In 2010, however, he acquired Dmitry Evgenyevich Rybolovlev's block of shares in Uralkali for over $ 5 billion .

In December 2007 Kerimov was elected by the parliament of his home region of Dagestan as its representative in the Federation Council , the Russian upper house. Previously, he had sat for the ultra-nationalists LDPR ("Liberal Democrats") of Vladimir Zhirinovsky in the lower house, the State Duma.

In April 2007, Zhirinovsky stated that Kerimov had been expelled from the parliamentary group for refusing to take part in regional elections in March. Observers rated the departure as a blow to Zhirinovsky, because Kerimov was considered one of his greatest financiers. Thereafter, Kerimov was counted to the faction of the pro-government United Russia party , which did not put him up for the December 2007 election.

Zhirinovsky and Kerimov visited Iraq in 1998 and are allegedly implicated in the oil-for-food program scandal.

In the context of the potash conflict between the Russian Uralkali and the Belarusian Belaruskali , Kerimov was accused by the Belarusian authorities as the largest single shareholder of the Uralkali of "abuse of power and abuse of official position". In November 2013 Kerimow gave up and sold his shares.

Karimov was arrested at Nice Airport in November 2017 and has been on trial in Aix en Provence on charges of extensive money laundering .

Private

Kerimov is married and has three children.

He is president of the Russian second division Anzhi Makhachkala and, according to Kicker Sportmagazin, is said to have supported the now defunct Moscow suburb Saturn Ramenskoye with 50 million euros. The boxer Sultan Ibragimow was also sponsored by him.

At the end of 2006 Kerimow suffered burn injuries in a Ferrari Enzo Ferrari in a serious accident near Nice in the south of France.
