Uralkali ( Russian Уралкалий ) is a Russian mining company headquartered in Berezniki , Perm region . The company mines potash and is Russia's largest mineral fertilizer manufacturer . In 2012 it was the world's largest potash producer with a production of 9.1 million tons of potassium chloride (KCl). It exports a large part of its products abroad, primarily to China, India and Brazil. The company is on the RTS index on the Moscow Stock Exchange and was listed on the London Stock Exchange between 2007 and 2015 .

structure

Potash factory

Production is provided from five mines (Berezniki 2 and 4; Solikamsk  1, 2 and 3) and six potassium chloride factories (Berezniki 2, 3 and 4; Solikamsk 1, 2 and 3) (as of January 2013). Uralkali has its own sales network and the two subsidiaries Belarusian Potash Company (BPC) (German: Belarusian Potash Company ) and Uralkali Trading SA (German: Uralkali Handels AG). Uralkali holds mining permits in Ust-Jaiwinski and for part of the Verkhnekamskoj potash deposit, the so-called Polowodowski deposit.

The Solikamsk 2 mine was closed in November 2014 after the workforce was evacuated from underground due to the excessive influx of brine and a 20 x 30 meter ping was discovered. The brine inflow increased from the original 200 m 3 / h to 820 m 3 / h by the beginning of February 2015 and the dimensions of the pinge grew to 58 × 87 meters.

owner

According to the company, at the beginning of April 2013, 53% of the shares were held by five individuals either directly or through participations. The Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimow held the largest direct share with 17.2%; He had additional influence over the company through his stake in a holding company that held a further 12.5% of Uralkali shares. The remainder of 47% was in free float .

Kerimov's shares were also reported accordingly on July 29, 2013 - one day before the start of the potash conflict (→ below). A few weeks later - on August 20, 2013, and in the midst of the potash conflict - he already held 21.75% of the company's shares and, through the holding company mentioned above, an unchanged proportion of 12.5%. His foundation, the Suleyman Kerimov Foundation , has now been named as the holder .

In September 2013, the Chengdong Investment Corporation - a subsidiary of the Chinese sovereign wealth fund China Investment Corp (CIC) - took over the 12.5% stake previously controlled by the Russian holding company.

Company history

The previous company Sojuskali started production in 1934 in Solikamsk, where since 1927 the workings of the mine Solikamsk one built and the wells drilled were. The first shaft at the Berezniki deposit was started in 1932 , but work was interrupted in 1936 due to financial difficulties. Work was only resumed shortly before the Second World War , and in 1942 the first salt was mined in Berezniki. During the war, the aviation industry urgently needed magnesium for fighter aircraft production, which is why on May 1, 1944, the production of carnallite was started in Verkhnekamskoje , from which the coveted magnesium could be produced. Between 1950 and 1960 the mines were completely modernized. In 1963 the USSR's first flotation processing plant was put into operation in the Berezniki potash factory. In 1986 the Berezniki 3 mine was drowned by a flood. The potash factory continues to operate and is supplied with K 2 O from the Berezniki 4 mine .

In 1992 Sojuskali was privatized and the Silwinit part of the business was split off as the English OJSC Silvinit . From 1991 privatization formed the basis of the financial rise of Dmitri Evgenyevich Rybolovlev . In 2010 Rybolowlew sold his shares to the Russian financial investor Suleiman Kerimow.

In 2001 the Baltic Bulk Terminal (BBT) was opened in Saint Petersburg , via which potash fertilizer is shipped. In October 2006 there was a saltwater ingress in Verkhnekamskoye. The reason was the approach to a geological anomaly and the pit had to be abandoned. Uralkali has been listed on the London Commodities Exchange since 2007.

In July 2011, Uralkali took over Silwinit. The new company produced 10.2 million tons of mineral fertilizers in 2011.

In 2012, work began on the new shafts in Ust-Jaiwinski.

Potash conflict (2013)

At the end of July 2013, Uralkali announced that it would stop the sale of its production via the Belarusian Potash Company (BPC), which had previously been used jointly with the Belarusian potash producer Belaruskali , and that it would market its production itself, as Belaruskali had been doing business past the sales company several times since December 2012 have.

As a result, there were fears on the international financial markets that the world market price for potash would fall significantly, as a result of which the share prices of several potash producers collapsed. The share of the German potash producer K + S fell by more than 25%.

On August 19, 2013 Belaruskali described in a press release the relevant statements by Uralkali then CEO Baumgertner as "provocative, emotional, unprecedented and imprudent" and suspected that the move was based on the "private interests of shareholders" of the Uralkali and "personal ambitions of some of their executives" . Belaruskali has no intention of reviving the partnership with Uralkali under their current management.

A week later, Baumgertner was arrested on his return trip from a meeting with the Belarusian Prime Minister Mikhail Mjasnikowitsch at Minsk airport and, after a month's imprisonment, placed under house arrest; The Belarusian authorities accuse him of abusing his office "for the purpose of personal gain" in the course of his work as Chairman of the Belarusian Potash Company (BPC) . In addition, international arrest warrants have been issued against four other Uralkali top executives because the stakeholders have suffered damage of 100 million US dollars or more.

Since September 2, 2013, the Russian oligarch and largest single shareholder of the Uralkali, Suleiman Kerimow , has been wanted by international arrest warrant; The Belarusian authorities accuse him of “abuse of power and abuse of office”. However, on September 11, 2013, Interpol denied that international arrest warrants had already been issued against Kerimov and the four Uralkali executives; rather, the relevant applications would first be examined.

Disaster in Solikamsk 2018

In a fire at the Solikamsk 3 potash plant on December 23, 2018, 9 miners were killed at a depth of around 340 meters . 8 other miners could be saved.

other activities

In 2009 the Institute for Potash Salts was founded at the Perm State Technical University with the support of Uralkali and Silwinit .
