The National Minsk Airport ( Belarusian Нацыянальны аэрапорт Мінск ; sooner airport Minsk-2 ) is the international airport of the Belarusian capital Minsk .

history

The airport was built from 1977 by the architects J. Grigoryev, B. Lartschenko, G. Sisojew and N. Temnova as a supplement to the smaller city airport Minsk-1 and opened in 1982, regular flight operations began in 1983. It serves as the home base for the national Belarusian Belavia airline .

Location and transport links

Minsk National Airport is 42 kilometers east of Minsk and is connected to the city center by bus line 300 . It can also be reached from the Minsk ring road via the M2 motorway.

Airlines and Destinations

The airport is connected by several airlines with numerous mainly European destinations. The largest local airline is Belavia , which is based here and offers connections to Amsterdam , London , Moscow and Tehran , for example . From the German-speaking region, Minsk is currently served by Lufthansa from Frankfurt am Main , Belavia from Frankfurt, Berlin and Hanover and Austrian Airlines from Vienna .

Visa-free entry via the Minsk National Airport

The Minsk National Airport has a special feature in terms of entry. Since July 27, 2018, travelers from 74 countries can only enter Belarus via the Minsk National Airport for a period of up to 30 days without a visa . This applies, among other things, to all states of the European Union and, in the German-speaking area, to Switzerland and Liechtenstein . A visa is still required for all other border crossings. Visa-free entry is also not possible from Russian airports.

Incidents

The British Aerospace BAe-125 crashed on October 26, 2009

The airport has recorded numerous incidents in its history, two of which were fatal in the immediate vicinity of the airport:

  • On February 1, 1985 the pilots of a Tupolev Tu-134 of the Russian Aeroflot ( registration number CCCP-65910 ) made an emergency landing in a forest, 10 kilometers from the airport, shortly after take-off from Minsk 2 airport. Shortly after each other, both engines had failed because they had sucked in broken ice lumps from the incorrectly de-iced wings. 58 occupants, 55 passengers and 3 crew members were killed in the accident; 22 occupants survived (see also Aeroflot flight 7841 ) .
  • On July 13, 2016, numerous aircraft were damaged, in some cases considerably, by a violent storm. An Antonov An-12 of the Ruby Star (EW-338TI) came loose and was pushed into a Boeing 737 (EW-283PA) of Belavia Belarusian Airlines , smaller aircraft were swept away; numerous panes of the airport building dented and water penetrated. The airport was temporarily closed.
