The airport Homel located three kilometers northeast of Gomel , the second largest city in Belarus . It opened in 1968.
history
Homel Airport was the home base of the airline Gomelavia , which however ceased operations on February 22, 2011 due to bankruptcy. Gomelavia offered flights to Minsk , Moscow , Hrodna and Kaliningrad . Since July 25, 2011, Belarus' national airline Belavia has been offering flights from Gomel to Kaliningrad during the summer season.
In addition to Belarusian airlines, the national airline of Latvia , Air Baltic , operated flights from Homel to Riga in 2006, but these have not been operated since then.
Today the airport is mainly used for charter flights to Italy , Belgium , Spain and other Western European countries. These are mostly organized by Western European organizations that bring children to host families for recreational purposes.
In the summer of 2014, due to the local population's perception of the instability and the ongoing war in Ukraine , Belavia operated new flights to Thessaloniki and Burgas . The flights to Kaliningrad have included a stopover at Minsk National Airport since summer 2014 .
The second runway should be opened in November 2018.
Airlines and destinations
The airline Belavia flies seasonally to Minsk and Kaliningrad and to Sharm el-Sheikh , and there are seasonal charter flights to and from Burgas , Hurghada , Nizhnevartovsk , Nojabrsk , Thessaloniki , Tivat and Zakynthos . Seasonal flights between Gomel and Moscow have also been offered since 2018.
Local public transport
Once a day a bus runs between the airport and the central bus station in both directions. Along the way, the bus stops near St. Trinity Temple, the University and Vosstaniya Square.
