The Burgas airport ( Bulgarian Летище Бургас / Burgas Letischte; IATA Code : BOJ , ICAO code : LBBG ) is located north of the center of Bourgas ( Bulgaria ), bordered to the south by the district Sarafovo . It is the second oldest and today with around 3 million passengers (2017), after Sofia Airport , the most frequented airport in Bulgaria. The tourist centers Sunny Beach , Nessebar , Obzor , Pomorie , Sozopol and Djuni are within a radius of 10 km to 40 km. It is also used militarily by NATO and the Bulgarian Air Force . The airport is used as an aviation hub by several Bulgarian airlines.

With a length of 3200 m, the runway is also suitable for large jets such as the Boeing 747 . Until the opening of the new runway at Sofia Airport, Burgas had the longest runway in Bulgaria . In October 2010, the expansion and construction of the airport began. The new passenger terminal was opened at the end of 2013.

Transport links

Burgas Airport is 10 km north of the city center and can be reached via the trunk road towards Varna . The airport is only separated from the city center by Lake Atanasov, which is partially overflown on approach and departure. The bus line 15 of the municipal transport company Burgasbus connects the airport with the city center of Burgas. Line 15 runs daily between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. every 25 minutes between the main train station via the municipal clinic, the Lasur Stadium , the Sarafowo district and the airport.

history

In 1927, experts from the French airline CIDNA (later Air France ) selected the location for the airport on a hill about 10 kilometers northeast of Burgas. In 1942, German engineers and geodesists expanded Burgas Airport to make it easier for larger aircraft to land. During this renovation, the airport was electrified and equipped with large fuel tanks.

On June 29, 1947, the first 14 passengers landed on a scheduled flight in a Junkers Ju 52 . This date is now considered the date of birth of the Bulgarian civil aviation. Between 1962 and 1963 a reinforced concrete runway was built with a length of 2600 m, which was extended to 3200 m between 1977 and 1979. The result described the national press as "the most modern airport in Bulgaria" and "the air palace Burgas". In 1970, Burgas Airport became an international airport. Aircraft from 45 destinations landed or took off. In 1980, Burgas Airport was the only one to be classified as a "second category" airport. In 1991, Burgas Airport became the first Bulgarian airport to become a member of the World Association of Airports ACI .

Since 2001 the United States Air Force has been using the airport for stopovers, as a base for air refueling operations and, via the nearby American military base " Camp Sarafovo ", for air handling. Therefore, in addition to Boeing KC-135 and McDonnell Douglas KC-10 tanker aircraft, large-capacity military aircraft and civilian contractors such as Kalitta Air and Volga-Dnepr Airlines can often be found. Refurbishment and modernization of the airport in 2001 was partially funded by the United States Agency for International Development . The Bulgarian air force is now also handling transport flights via Burgas Airport.

At the end of 2004, Burgas Airport was named "Best Bulgarian Airport" and received an award from the Ministry of Transport as the most dynamically developing airport in Bulgaria. As a result of the financial crisis from 2007 and the accompanying stagnation in tourism, around 1.7 million passengers (-11.99% compared to the previous year) and 15,634 flights (-7.77% compared to the previous year) were handled in 2009.

Due to the favorable meteorological conditions, weather-related closings are rare. For this reason, it often functions as an alternate airport for the other Bulgarian airports. Domestic flights are offered to Sofia and Varna, and there are international scheduled flights to Vienna , London , Budapest , Tel Aviv and Moscow .

On July 18, 2012, an attack on a coach outside the airport killed 7 people, including five Israelis and one Bulgarian. Up to 32 other people, including two Russians, were injured, some seriously.

Part of the new terminal

Due to the high investment requirements for the modernization and expansion of the airport, the operation of the airport was privatized in 2006 by means of a tender and a 35-year concession for the airports in Varna and Burgas was awarded to Fraport Twin Star Airport Management AD , where the German company Fraport AG (Operator of Frankfurt / Main Airport) is involved. The Fraport Group was able to assert itself against the Danish Copenhagen Airports A / S in the award .

Burgas Airport Ltd. intends to invest and complete the expansion by € 49.6 million by 2009. Of this, € 33.5 million is to be used for the construction of a new 43,200 m² passenger terminal.

Airlines

Some airlines fly to Burgas in regular service. In the summer, a large number of charter airlines from all over Europe also serve the airport.

Incidents

  • On September 3, 1968 an Ilyushin Il-18E of the Bulgarian Bulair ( aircraft registration LZ-BEG) was flown into the ground on the return flight from Dresden on the approach to Burgas Airport. When flying around showers and a thunderstorm, the machine was flown off-road at a height of almost 200 meters near Karnobat, 45 kilometers from the destination airport. In this CFIT ( Controlled flight into terrain ), 47 of the 89 people on board were killed.
