The Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chávez (formerly Lima-Callao ) is the airport of the Peruvian capital Lima . It is located on the northern edge in the city of Callao bordering to the west, directly on the Pacific Ocean, about ten kilometers from the city center of Lima. With a passenger volume of 22 million per year, it is by far the largest airport in Peru.
Location and transport links
The airport is located about ten kilometers northwest of downtown Lima in Callao . At the moment it is only possible to get to the airport by bus or taxi. A metro line (line 4) is currently under construction.
history
Lima Airport was opened in 1960 to replace the old Limatambo Airport (in San Isidro ).
Since privatization in 2001, he has been owned by Lima Airport Partners (LAP), a joint venture between AC Capitales SAFI SA (10%), International Finance Corporation (19.9%) and Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide (70.1%) ) operated and comprehensively modernized and expanded. In 2005, the first construction phase with new check-in areas for national and international passengers and seven passenger boarding bridges, as well as a shopping area Peru Plaza was completed. In January 2009, the second construction phase with an additional terminal area of 18,000 m² and a total of 19 gates was completed. The tower and the apron were also redesigned. The construction of a new runway is planned for the future.
The airport was named the best airport in South America for the sixth time by Skytrax in 2014 .
expansion
In the course of an expansion program agreed between the Peruvian government and the operator in July 2017, 1.5 billion dollars are to be invested from 2018. First, a second runway and later a new passenger terminal and other infrastructure facilities are to be built. The construction of the runway is expected to take about four years. Construction of the new terminal, which is up to three times larger, is expected to be completed in 2022. In return for the investments, the government will extend the concession until 2041 and provide the necessary land
Airlines and Destinations
The airport, named after the Peruvian aviation pioneer Jorge Chávez , is the main airport of the Chilean-Peruvian airline LATAM Perú and some smaller regional airlines. It is the most important hub for domestic air traffic. Internationally, this airport plays a rather minor role.
From Europe, the airport is currently owned by Amsterdam with KLM and Madrid with LATAM Airlines , Iberia , Plus Ultra and Air Europa fly. Air France has been connecting Lima directly with Paris since June 2011 . By British Airways to connect to is since May 2016 London-Gatwick offered. In addition, LATAM Perú has been offering a connection to Barcelona since December 2016 .
Other destinations of other airlines are limited to the American continent, e.g. B. São Paulo , Bogotá , New York , Miami and Caracas .
The military bases of the Peruvian Air Force and Navy are located in the same airport area . The former also offers civil flights inland, mostly to less frequented places.

Incidents
- On November 27, 1962, a Boeing 707-441 (PP-VJB) crashed while approaching Lima-Callao Airport when it was flown into the side of Mount La Cruz. All 80 passengers and the 17 crew members were killed. It could not be determined why the machine had deviated from its course.
