story

A Boeing 757 in the original Air Europa colors, which corresponded to those of the British parent company Air Europe

Air Europa was founded on February 17th, 1984 under the name Air España . In 1986 the British charter airline Air Europe took a stake in the company. In the same year, the British company integrated Air España into the Airlines of Europe Group , a consortium of airlines in which the British company had interests. As a result of the takeover, the Spanish company changed its name to Air Europa and on November 21, 1986, it first operated a flight from Tenerife to London under the new name. After the British Air Europe had to file for bankruptcy in 1991, the Spanish Air Europa was sold to a group of investors .

Through the first domestic flights a private airline broke through Air Europa 1993, the monopoly of Iberia in Spain. In 1995 the company also served destinations abroad by scheduled flight for the first time . The first destinations were London and New York City . In 1996 there were already 750 flights a week. In the same year the subsidiary Air Europa Express was founded as a division for domestic flights.

In 1998 Air Europa joined the new holding company Globalia Corporacion Empresarial. Two years later, the company bought the first new Boeing 767-300ER direct from Boeing for transatlantic flights .

In October 2001, Air Europa Express ceased operations due to low demand, economic problems and the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , and 330 employees were made redundant.

Air Europa has had a partnership with SkyTeam since 2006 and finally became a full member in 2010. Through this collaboration, we also joined the frequent flyer program Flying Blue of Air France-KLM in.

In 2007, Air Europa, together with the government of the Dominican Republic, founded the subsidiary Air Dominicana as the country's future flag carrier . After several delays in starting operations, it was finally announced on September 21, 2009 that the project would not be pursued any further.

In spring 2012, Air Europa retired its last Boeing 767-300ER .

In January 2015, the airline asked the responsible American authorities for three to four daily flights between Miami and Havana .

In November 2015, Air Europa bought the Spanish Aeronova ; Since January 2016, the subsidiary has been offering low-cost flights across Europe under the Air Europa Express brand .

In July 2016, Air Europa announced that it would order twenty 737 MAX-8s from Boeing. The order was previously assigned to an unknown customer at Boeing.

On November 4, 2019, it was announced that the International Airlines Group (IAG), owner of competing Iberia , intends to take over Air Europa for a purchase price of around one billion euros. Due to the loss in value of Air Europa as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic , the IAG demanded a significant price reduction for the takeover of Globalia in April 2020. On December 21, 2020, the boards of directors of Air Europa, Iberia and the IAG Group announced that they had approved the purchase of Air Europa for EUR 500 million. The sum was thus half lower than indicated a year earlier. This was criticized by Spanish newspaper commentators, who alluded to a previously granted emergency loan of almost EUR 500 million for Air Europa. The Spanish taxpayer saved the airline and helped Iberia to get a bargain price. The purchase price to the owners of Air Europa does not have to be paid until 2026, when they have repaid the loan to the Spanish state. The Spanish state company for industrial holdings still has to approve the deal , but this is considered a formality.

Destinations

Air Europa mainly serves holiday and city destinations in Northern and Western Europe , Africa, as well as in South , Central and North America and the Caribbean from its Madrid-Barajas hub . In the German-speaking area, there are flights to Düsseldorf , Frankfurt , Munich and Zurich .
