Kenya Airways is a Kenyan airline based in Nairobi and based at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and a member of the SkyTeam airline alliance .
history
The airline was founded in February 1977 after the East African community collapsed, which marked the demise of the old East African Airways . Liner service began on February 4, 1977 and the airline was completely owned by the Kenyan government until April 1996. In 1986, Sessional Paper Number 1 was published by the Kenyan government, in which it was stressed that the airline would be better off in the hands of private investors. This resulted in the first attempt to privatize the airline. The government appointed Philip Ndegwa as chairman of the board with a mandate to privatize the airline.
In the 1993/1994 financial year, the airline made a profit for the first time since commercialization began. In 1994, International Finance Corporation was hired to assist the airline with the privatization process. In 1995, massive financial changes were made such as debt reduction and a cooperation agreement with KLM . In 1996 the airline went public in Nairobi. The Kenya Airways Cargo brand was reintroduced in April 2004, and the regional subsidiary Flamingo Airlines was integrated into the parent company in July 2004 .
The airline gained attention primarily through its ordering and operation of modern types of aircraft, such as the Boeing 737 Next Generation , Boeing 777 , Boeing 787 or Embraer 190 . According to its own statements, the airline won the “African Airline of the Year Award” four times, presented by African Aviation Magazine .
On September 4, 2007, Kenya Airways became an associate member of the SkyTeam aviation alliance , and a full member in June 2010.
In spring 2015, Kenya Airways announced that it would retire all of its Boeing 777s . The reason is the massive collapse in demand due to the tense security situation in Kenya, the Ebola virus epidemic in 2014 and the competition from Emirates and Etihad Airways . In May 2015, the company received a US $ 43 million loan from the government and contracted aerospace consultants Seabury Consulting to improve the company's profitability.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, Kenya as a country has been classified as category one since February 2018, with which airlines from Kenya, including Kenya Airways , are allowed to fly to the United States . On October 29, 2018, a Kenya Airways plane landed in New York for the first time . Since then, the connection has been offered daily with a Boeing 787-8 .
Allan Kilavuka has been the airline's managing director since February 28th . He previously held the same position at Jambojet .
Companies
The airline is owned by small Kenyan investors (30.94%), large Kenyan investors (14.2%), KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (26%), the Kenyan government (23%) and other foreign investors (5.86%) . The renewed nationalization of the airline to protect against international competitors supported by state funds has been under discussion since February 2019.
Kenya Airways has held 49% of the Tanzanian airline Precision Air since March 2003 and also operates code- sharing flights with it.
In the 2013/14 financial year (April 1, 2013– March 31, 2014), sales amounted to 106.009 billion Kenya shillings , which corresponds to around 829 million euros . A pre-tax loss of 4.861 billion Kenyan shillings (around 38 million euros) was generated. It employed 3,989 people, carried 3,719,590 passengers and transported 71,340 tons of freight. The average seat occupancy was 65.6%.

The co-pilot initiated a descent on the signal, which later turned out to be a false alarm, and steered the machine into the sea ( controlled flight into the terrain ). 169 of the 179 people on board were killed (see also Kenya Airways flight 431 ) .
- On May 5, 2007, a Boeing 737-800 (5Y-KYA) with 114 people on board on a flight from Douala , Cameroon to Nairobi crashed shortly after take-off due to a pilot's error. Seconds after take-off, the captain tilted the aircraft too far to the right due to spatial disorientation, so that it turned into a spiral flight and finally fell to the ground. All 114 occupants were killed (see also Kenya Airways flight 507 ) .
- When the engines were started on February 9, 2019 on an Embraer E-190 (5Y-KYR) that was being serviced at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport , the machine started up and rolled over the wheel chocks placed in front of the wheels. To avert a collision with a hangar, the technician sitting at the wheel steered the machine into a second, parked E-190 (5Y-FFF) . Both machines were badly damaged in the incident and ultimately written off as total losses.
