TAROM (short for T ransporturile A eriene Rom âne ) is Romania's national airline based in Bucharest and based at Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport . She is a member of the SkyTeam aviation alliance and the Flying Blue frequent flyer program .

history

TAROM's predecessor is the CFRNA ( Compagnie franco-roumaine de navigation aérienne ) founded in 1920 . Machines from the French manufacturer Potez were used for the passenger and mail line connection from Bucharest to Paris, with several stopovers in major European cities. In 1926 the name was changed to CIDNA and in 1930 to LARES ( Liniile Aeriene Române Exploatate de Stat ). In 1937, the merger took place with the competitor SARTA ( Societatea Romănâ de Transporturi Aeriene ).

After the Second World War, on August 8, 1945, it was re-established as the Romanian-Soviet airline TARS ( Transporturi Aeriene Româno-Sovietice ). Both states each held 50% shares in the company. The Soviet stake was taken over by the Romanian government on September 18, 1954, and the company was given the current name TAROM.

Until 1960, the route network consisted mainly of national and European connections. The first trans-Atlantic flight took place in 1966 and the first scheduled connection to New York in 1974 . The routes were carried out with machines of the Soviet design and with Boeing 707 . In the 1990s, the machines were replaced by the Airbus A310 . Between 2001 and 2003 all long-haul connections were discontinued.

TAROM has been a full member of the SkyTeam aviation alliance since June 2010 . Shortly before, the previous frequent flyer program Smart Miles had already been replaced by Air France-KLM's Flying Blue .

As part of the restructuring measures, Tarom put two new 737-800s into operation in May 2017. These are leased for ten years. The Minister of Transport also announced that it would resume long-haul flights. The first destinations are to be Beijing, Washington DC, New York, Chicago and Montréal. For 2017, the company also expected the tenth annual loss in a row. Both Wizz Air and Blue Air , as flexible competitors, had overtaken the tarom, which was restricted in a political corset. The CEO Eugen Davidoidu resigned in August 2017. The government appointed a successor who returned to his pilot position after a few weeks. The Supervisory Board then filled the CEO position with Daniela Dragne in October 2017, cautiously with a 30-day renewable contract.

After a year and a half, CEO Werner-Wilhelm Wolff was dismissed at the beginning of April 2019. He was accused of the horrific losses of the airline as well as clearly excessive management salaries. During his tenure, the majority of the aircraft had been extensively maintained and modernized in order to avoid long breakdowns of individual aircraft and to reduce the investment backlog of previous years. Florin Susanu led the company on an interim basis. In June 2019, the airline announced that it would replace its ATR 42-500, some of which were up to 20 years old, with more modern ATR 72-600 . The aircraft were to be leased from Nordic Aviation Capital and were to be used primarily on domestic routes. At the same time, a reorganization of the employee structure was initiated with layoffs of up to 300 employees, many of them in management. Airport offices were reduced in size (e.g. Munich) or closed. At the end of the year the loss was $ 44 million, while another CEO, Madalina Mezei, was replaced in October.

An An-24 of the TAROM with a red logo, 1975

Tarom has had a flying swallow as its logo since 1954. In the 1970s it was red, later the blue color was used. The logo has had its current appearance since 2006.

Destinations

In addition to several destinations within Romania, TAROM serves flight destinations in Europe and the Middle East . Destinations in the German-speaking area are Frankfurt am Main , Hamburg , Munich , Stuttgart and Vienna . Long-haul routes, such as the last one to the USA , are currently no longer offered.

Code sharing

TAROM has codeshare agreements with the SkyTeam companies as well as with Air Baltic , Air Serbia , Austrian Airlines , Brussels Airlines , Bulgaria Air and Royal Jordanian .

Before the upheaval of the Eastern Bloc, TAROM mostly flew aircraft from the Soviet manufacturers Antonov , Tupolew and Ilyushin . In addition, the types Rombac 1-11, a Romanian license build of the British BAC 1-11 , as well as Boeing 707 and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 were in use. TAROM's last Airbus A310-300 flew on October 29, 2016, and the company has not owned a wide-body aircraft since then .

Incidents

Since 1960, TAROM has recorded a total of 23 incidents with aircraft casualties, 14 of which were also fatal, as well as two aircraft hijackings. All five incidents since the end of the Soviet Union are listed here:

date plane Flight number the accident
August 14, 1991 Ilyushin Il-18 - The cargo plane coming from Bucharest collided with mountainous terrain due to an approach that was too low on Timișoara . All nine people on board were killed.
March 31, 1995 Airbus A310-300 371 On March 31, 1995, the worst accident in the history of TAROM occurred. The passenger plane ( TAROM flight 371 ) on its way from Bucharest to Brussels crashed shortly after take-off due to an engine malfunction, killing all 60 people on board. When switching from take-off mode to cruise flight, the thrust was significantly reduced by an automatic system on only one of the two engines, while the other remained at high power. Because of the difference, the machine turned and got into an uncontrollable position. She finally fell on free terrain near Baloteşti .
December 30, 1995 BAC 1-11 261 In bad weather, the passenger plane landed hard on the runway in Istanbul , whereupon the nose landing gear collapsed and the plane slid sideways from the runway . There were no fatalities, but the machine was damaged beyond repair.
June 7, 1997 335 On June 7, 1997, a BAC 1-11 hit the runway again when landing in Stockholm and was structurally irreparably damaged. Heavy gusts of wind occurred at the time of the accident.
December 30, 2007 Boeing 737-300 3107 During the take-off run in Bucharest, the aircraft collided in thick fog with a construction vehicle that had been left on the runway. The machine was damaged beyond repair, but there were no fatalities.
