Air France-KLM , based in Paris, is a listed holding company that, since 2004, has included the still legally independent airlines Air France and KLM . The largest shareholder is the French state with 14.3 percent. The Dutch state has held a total of 12.68 percent since February 2019. A further increase to the level of the French share is sought. Delta Air Lines and China Eastern Airlines also held high stakes of 8.8 percent each in 2017 .

At the end of 2018, 88,800 employees generated sales of almost 26.5 billion euros. Air France-KLM transported 101.4 million passengers worldwide in 2018. As of the end of 2018, the fleet of the airlines Air France and KLM comprised 548 aircraft.

In 2020, Air France-KLM ran into financial difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated significant restrictions in global air traffic. In April 2020, the governments of France and the Netherlands announced that they would be providing the two airlines with government support of up to EUR 9 billion. The French Minister for Economic Affairs, Bruno Le Maire , promised financial aid totaling seven billion euros, including three billion in government loans and four billion in guarantees for bank loans. This is linked to demands for more profitability and environmental awareness, but the EU Commission still has to approve the aid . The Dutch finance minister Wopke Hoekstra said that he would give Air France-KLM aid between two and four billion euros.
