The Verallia Germany AG (until August 2016 Saint-Gobain Oberland AG ) is a publicly traded subsidiary of Apollo Global Management . The company's headquarters are in Bad Wurzach in the Ravensburg district . It is one of the leading manufacturers of glass packaging for beverages and food in Germany. Under the name Oberland Glas AG , the company began as a pioneer in the 1980s to systematically collect waste glass and process it into color-sorted raw materials that can be returned directly to the melting tank. It has been operating under the brand name Verallia since 2010 .

Oberland glass

In 1946 Oberland Glas GmbH was founded in Bad Wurzach. The company premises were in the immediate vicinity of the Wurzach vineyard . The idea was to coke the peat right next to the factory and use this gas to heat the melting tanks for glass production. In 1953 Harry Wiegand took over the factory and expanded the still more manual production into a fully automated industrial company with the aim of mass production at a quality level. In the years to come, the Bad Wurzach location was constantly expanded and renewed. In 1983 the glass works in Neuburg an der Donau was taken over for logistical optimization in terms of customer-oriented production. In 1986 the company went public. In 1988 Oberland Glas AG took over Ruhrglas GmbH in Essen and Westerwald AG in Wirges . This also marked the beginning of a slowly increasing equity stake by Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, initially 35%. In 1991, Saint-Gobain took over the majority of the capital (60%).

The company produces bottles and jars for all types of drinks and food and beverages - from 100 ml to 5 liters - in standardized forms and to specific customer requirements for the recycling -Einweg- or multiple use . The company has three further locations in Germany in Neuburg an der Donau, Essen and Wirges in the Westerwald.

In 1997 there was a return to and concentration on the actual core business of container glass. In 1999 Oberland Glas became the German market leader in the manufacture of container glass. In 2000 the name was changed to Saint-Gobain Oberland AG to strengthen its strategic position on an international level. In 2001 a 35% stake in ISI-Zhanjiang, China, was acquired, but was sold in 2006. In 2004 the first entrepreneurial commitment began in Russia with a 9% stake in the Kavminsteklo ZAO glassworks, Kamyshin, which was increased to 60% in 2005. In the same year, 79.7% of the Ukrainian glassworks Consumers-Sklo-Zorya were acquired. In 2008, more than 90% of the shares in the ZAO Kamyshinsky Steklozarny Zawod glass factory in Kamyshin, Russia, were taken over.

In 2009, further minority shares were acquired from Saint-Gobain Kavminsteklo ZAO: the stake in the Russian company was further increased from 89.9% to 94.3%.

Since 2010, all of Saint-Gobain's glass packaging companies have been united under the Verallia brand . The introduction of this brand initially had no influence on the company's legal name. It was not until 2016 that Saint-Gobain Oberland AG was renamed Verallia Deutschland AG. In 2015, Saint-Gobain parted with its Verallia packaging division . The buyer was Apollo Global Management .
