Wirges is a town in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate and the administrative seat of the Verbandsgemeinde Wirges , to which it also belongs. Wirges is designated as a medium-sized center according to state planning .
Geographical location
Wirges is located in a high trough of the front Westerwald between the mountains Köppel ( 540.2 m ) in the southwest, Malberg ( 422 m ) in the northeast and the Wirges "local mountain" Steimel ( 333.7 m ) in the north. A Marienkapelle was built there in 1865, which can be reached from the village via a crossroads. On the Steimel there is a small educational trail through a bird sanctuary.

history
Wirges was first mentioned in a document in 958. The town charter was awarded on May 10, 1975th
middle Ages
The first written evidence for the existence of a parish village Wirges in the area of the manorial rule Humbach (Montabaur) is a deed of donation from King Otto I of April 29, 958. The historical document concerns a royal court in Wirges, which then became the property of the count's widow Engersgau , Duke Hermann I of Swabia, passes over.
A little later, Duchess Reginlind von Schwaben bequeathed the farm to the Koblenzer Florinsstift , which in 1018 AD was given away by Emperor Heinrich II. With all the properties belonging to it to the Archbishop of Trier, Poppo von Babenberg .
The Fronhof in Widergis, mentioned in 1211 in the Liber annalium iurium (list of goods) of the Archbishopric of Trier, is certainly identical to the earlier royal court from the 10th century. It is not known who managed it.
From 1217, however, a knight Conradus de Widergis belongs to the castle team of Montabaur. He is probably the earliest Wirgesian known by name.
20th century
At the beginning of the National Socialist era, there was a communist underground newspaper Die Bombe von Wirges in Wirges, which was published by Helmuth Preußer (1905-1944). After the newspaper was blown in July 1933, Helmuth Preusser fled to Saarland, but was later arrested and drafted into parole 999 , where he was killed a short time later during an assignment in Yugoslavia.
religion
Around 52 percent of the population belong to the Roman Catholic Church (parish of St. Bonifatius, Diocese of Limburg ), and 21 percent to the Protestant church (Martin Luther parish in Wirges, Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau ). About 15 percent belong to other religious communities. Religious affiliation is not recorded for around 12 percent of the population. In addition to the two large churches, there is a Mennonite congregation and two Islamic prayer rooms.
The " Westerwald Cathedral ", the Catholic parish church of St. Bonifatius, is characteristic of the place. In 1885 the foundation stone for the neo-Gothic church was laid. It was consecrated by the Limburg bishop in 1887. The Dernbacher Sisters were founded in this church in 1851 by Maria Katharina Kasper, who was canonized in 2018 .
