Location of the local community Mogendorf in the Westerwaldkreis | ||
Mogendorf (colloquially Munruff ) is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Wirges .
Geographical location
Mogendorf is located on a plateau in the front Westerwald in a hollow in the middle of the Kannenbäckerland . The latter shows an important characteristic of the village in the Unterwesterwald, because clay mining has always been typical of Mogendorf due to the rich clay deposits typical of the Kannenbäckerland.
history
In a document from the Florinsstift dated around 1385, Mogendorf was first mentioned as 'Oberdorf'. The place was on what was then the Salt Road and, due to its geographical location, was a very good settlement area. By the Thirty Years' War Mogendorf grew to 12 to 14 families, was then decimated down to four main families and afflicted by changing marauding mercenary groups.
After 1700 Mogendorf experienced an unexpected boom and soon housed up to 70 families.
During the wars of freedom at the beginning of the 19th century, Russian and later Prussian troops were quartered in Mogendorf, and they had to be fed with their animals. In 1816 Mogendorf was also hit by a bad harvest, which led to rising food prices with the simultaneous significant increase in population. From 1843 onwards there was a wave of emigration to the USA.
The strivings for freedom in 1848 also reached Mogendorf. The parishes were given the right to choose their mayors themselves, which led to “the mayor Joh. Friedrich Remy being deposed in Mogendorf”.
Since 1870 the Mogendorfer Krugmanufaktur experienced an economic boom, the village reached a population of almost a thousand. However, this did not last long and brought about an economic crisis with the spread of the glass bottle.
In 1903 Mogendorfer founded their own health insurance, which lasted until the beginning of the First World War. As in the rest of the empire, the national enthusiasm for the war changed when its fatal (20 Mogendorfer died or were reported missing) and economic consequences became more and more noticeable. In order to escape the threat of recruitment, Baader writes, "some people go into the clay pit who would never have been willing to do such work in the past". After the surrender, Mogendorf was occupied by American troops, a process that was repeated in 1945 after the Second World War. The American occupation was replaced by the French after a few months. Mogendorf became a new home for some evacuees and displaced persons. During the time of National Socialism there were also pogroms in Mogendorf .
The new school building, built in 1952, reflects the spirit of optimism of the time: a building that was not cheap for the time is a testament to the importance that the young Federal Republic of Germany attached to education. A short time later, Mogendorf was connected to the gas network and again an industrial area was made available a few years later.

coat of arms
Description of the coat of arms : "Green, split by a curled, silver tip , inside an eight-flame red fire, in front a cylindrical, silver mug with handle, behind a silver spade".
Mogendorf's connection with clay mining is also evident on the town's coat of arms. The clay jug, the spade and the fire symbolize the way from the raw material clay to the finished jug. In the past, the clay was painstakingly pricked with a clay spade, then shaped and burned in a furnace - represented by the fire. The colors green and white were not chosen by chance either, but represent the tone and the forest landscape around Mogendorf.
Economy and Infrastructure
Clay pits and pottery
In the past, the Eulers provided most of the jobs in Mogendorf - 44 ceramic companies were based there - and the village still has numerous ceramic companies today . Nevertheless, the times in this trade have become much more difficult, which can be seen in the number of people employed in this branch in Mogendorf as well as in the number of established businesses.
The potters mainly make products for the household, especially pots, jugs, plates, bottles, cups and mugs. Frost-proof planters, outdoor and indoor fountains, and decorative figures are also handcrafted in Mogendorf. The traditional salt glaze , which is typical of the Kannenbäckerland, still dominates . The ornamentation follows the blueprints with shades of blue and brown that have existed for more than a hundred years, especially for higher-quality products.
The companies obtain the raw material for their products from the clay pits around Mogendorf, among other places. These are also the reason why Mars Germany has been producing the Seramis plant care system in Mogendorf since 1990 .
