Oberelbert is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Montabaur community .

geography

The community extends at an altitude of 310 to 340  m above sea level. NN . Oberelbert is about five kilometers south of Montabaur in the Nassau am Stelzenbach nature park ; Neighboring towns are Niederelbert in the north, Daubach in the east and Welschneudorf in the south-west. The place is surrounded by extensive forest areas.

history

The oldest proof of the existence of Oberelbert by name comes from the year 1436, together with Niederelbert as "Obern und Nyddern Elwart". However, the village is probably much older. Even before 1200, under the spell of the village of Humbach ( Montabaur ), the Archbishop of Trier owned, among other things, a Wildhube zu Elewartin . In the extensive forest area around Humbach, the forest Spurginberch (Spurkenberg), there were two Försterhuben to Elwartin around 1212 . These were forester farms with arable land classified in the forest, which are mentioned on documents from the years 1212 and 1214. Evidence of a dispute between the members of the St. Florin Monastery in Koblenz about the use of the Pfaffenholz forest near Elewarthe comes from 1233. From 1362, because Niederelbert ( inferiori Elewarten ) was mentioned for the first time in that year, it can also be concluded that Oberelbert existed .

Document mentions

27 years after the first mention, in a contract of 1463, the Lords of Helfenstein are named as owners of the manor of Elbert and the villages of Nieder Elbartt and Obern Elbartt . Probably thirteen years later, but no later than 1584, Oberelbert owned a chapel. The tenth district "Zeche Oberelbert" already existed before 1500 and was part of the office and ban of Montabaur. After the division of the Montabaur ban around 1550/60, the villages came under the Holler ban . The representatives of Ober- and Niederelbert recognized the archbishop of Trier as overlord and Lord von Helfenstein as court lord in 1508 according to the old tradition in a " wisdom ". In 1519, the Archbishop of Trier transferred half of the Elbert manor to the Lord of Nassau (zur Sporkenburg ) as a fief.

Around 1602, three quarters of the manor was in the hands of the von Metternichs. The remaining quarter was Kurtrier Kameralbesitz .

Rebuilding after the Thirty Years War

In 1630 and finally in 1636, Oberelbert was completely destroyed and uninhabitable during the Swedish War . Reconstruction and resettlement began around 1642. From 1711 there was a newly built chapel and in 1770 the parish with Welschneudorf was set up as a branch. In 1795, the villagers had to bring their cattle to safety from the plundering French revolutionary army in the Metternicher Heck . The former Electorate of Upper Elbert became subjects of Nassau from 1803 , a state that was to last until 1866, when Oberelbert then became Prussian. Nine years after the community came to Nassau, the place was destroyed for the second time: on September 12, 1811, the village burned down to six small houses. With the reconstruction of the parish (back) house in 1812, the rectory four years later, the school then in 1823/24 and finally between 1830 and 1832 the church, the old stock of the village was restored. During this time of destruction, the outbreak of typhus also fell from 1813 to 1815, probably brought in by dispersed French soldiers retreating from Russia . Many people died from the disease.

20th century

The beginning of the 20th century brought far-reaching infrastructural innovations to Oberelbert. In 1913 a pilot station was set up at the Busskreuz . In mid-August, two aircraft crashed there on approach. During the First World War , the petroleum shortage led to an accelerated supply of electricity. On March 3, 1916, electric street lamps burned for the first time in Oberelbert. The houses were connected to the new central water supply system in 1923 and on November 11, 1926 the post bus route Montabaur - Welschneudorf was set up via Oberelbert. There was brisk construction activity in the village between 1926 and 1931, when the expansion and population increased significantly.

During the Second World War , 38 inhabitants of Oberelbert lost their lives through acts of war.

From 1953 onwards the town expanded by opening up new building areas. The new school was built from 1962 and passed its purpose two years later. From 1966, garbage disposal was introduced on site. In the course of the administration reform in Rhineland-Palatinate, the municipality was assigned to the Montabaur association in 1972 . From 1982 onwards there were no more school lessons in the community, the students had to move to the neighboring towns. The Stelzenbachhalle was built between 1993 and 1994, and in 1997 the population of Oberelbert first reached the 1,000 mark.
