history

Wallmerode was first mentioned in a document on February 4, 1276. The word ending -rode, rod refers to the medieval clearing of forests for the production of arable and pasture land. On this day the Archbishops of Cologne and Trier, Count Gerhard von Diez, as well as Heinrich von Sponheim and Diether von Molsberg met. There Diether von Molsberg and his wife Lisa von Isenburg seal that they will no longer damage the Marienstatt Monastery in the future and that they want to keep all rights to it forever. Thus, in the presence of two archbishops and several sovereigns, a long dispute between the Marienstatt monastery and the lords of Molsberg was settled.

In the Duchy of Nassau , the official seat of Amt Meudt was moved from Montabaur to Wallmerod in 1831 and called Amt Wallmerod .

In the course of an administrative reform, Wallmerod became the administrative seat of the Verbandsgemeinde in 1972.

The town, which today has 1,438 inhabitants, was of great importance early on due to its location. The main branch of Bundesstrasse 8 , formerly known as Hohe or Kölnische Strasse , leading right through Wallmerod , was probably an ancient connecting route from northwest to southeast (from Antwerp to Innsbruck ).
