Höchstenbach is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Hachenburg community .

The community is located in the Westerwald between Limburg and Siegen in the Wiedtal. The Wied flows through the village .

history

On May 27, 1269, Höchstenbach was first mentioned in a document .

Until the middle of the 17th century, Höchstenbach was a sovereign part of the County of Sayn . After the introduction of the Reformation in the county of Sayn, the inhabitants were first Lutheran and later reformed . After the state division of the County of Sayn in the 17th century, Höchstenbach belonged to the County of Sayn-Hachenburg .

During the First Coalition War , the French General François Séverin Marceau was seriously wounded in Höchstenbach in September 1796 and died a few days later in Altenkirchen .

In 1799, Sayn-Hachenburg was inherited by the princes of Nassau-Weilburg . In connection with the formation of the Rhine Confederation , the region and with it Höchstenbach came to the newly established Duchy of Nassau in 1806 . After the annexation of the Duchy of Nassau, the place came to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866 and belonged to the province of Hessen-Nassau from 1868 on . Höchstenbach has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 .

On June 1, 1955, one of the worst bus accidents in Germany to date occurred in Höchstenbach. 18 women from the Protestant community in Rheinhausen were killed.

Culture and sights

  • The village church in the Romanesque transition style, built in the early 13th century, is worth seeing . There are valuable early Gothic frescoes inside the church .
  • Above the village, at the beginning of the Höchstenbacher Wald, the Marceau monument is on the right of the road . It was built in 1863 by Emperor Napoleon III. donated in memory of General François Séverin Marceau . The memorial inscription says: "Weeping by his soldiers, respected by friend and foe."

The community lies at the intersection of federal highways 8 , which leads from Limburg an der Lahn to Siegburg , and the B 413 from Bendorf (near Koblenz) to Hachenburg . The next motorway junctions are in Dierdorf or Mogendorf on the A 3 from Cologne - Frankfurt am Main , about 20 kilometers away. The closest ICE stop is Montabaur train station on the Cologne – Rhein / Main high-speed line .
