Hartenfels (dialect: Harbels ) is a municipality in the Westerwaldkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Selters (Westerwald) .
Geographical location
Hartenfels is located on the Holzbach and about 4 km from Herschbach and 8 km from Selters (Westerwald) . Neighboring communities are Herschbach and Schenkelberg in the west, Steinen in the east and Maxsain in the south of the community. A small forest area belonging to Hartenfels, the Hartenfelser Kopf , is located outside the municipal boundaries north of the town on the B 8 between Freilingen and Höchstenbach .
History and sights
The castle Hartenfels is first mentioned in ancient writings in the year 1249, respectively. In 1332 the town of Hartenfels was granted city rights by Ludwig the Bavarian , which was confirmed in 1346 by Charles IV . The place is known for its castle ruins, which have been in ruins since 1593, of which only the tower stands, apart from a few walls. It is the creamer-like tower of a castle that was built in the middle of the 13th century to monitor the nearby trade route from Frankfurt to Cologne.
It belonged to Countess Mechthild von Sayn from the inheritance of her husband Heinrich III, who died in 1246 . von Sayn and came under Archbishop Arnold II. von Isenburg to Kurtrier .
The ruin is called Schmanddippe in dialect . In 1999 the municipality of Hartenfels celebrated its 750th anniversary.

Municipal council
The local council in Hartenfels consists of twelve council members, who were elected by a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Andreas Strüder became the local mayor of Hartenfels on January 23, 2014. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in office for another five years with 84.52 percent of the votes cast.

The most important employer is Huf Haus GmbH & Co. KG with approx. 470 employees.
Hartenfelser Kopf wind farm
In the summer of 2006, twelve Enercon E-70 wind turbines were completed on the Hartenfelser Kopf. These supply around 12,500 households. It is therefore one of the largest wind farm projects in a forest that has ever been implemented in Germany. There are four wind turbines in the Hartenfels district. In the following years, more wind turbines were erected, so that 26 wind turbines have been erected in the meantime.
Regular events
In January, in honor of the patron saint, St. Anthony, patron saint's day January 17th, two concerts by the music association take place on two consecutive weekends. Every year at Whitsun the music festival "Rock am Turm" takes place on the Burgberg, and every year at Christmas an illuminated Christmas tree up to eight meters high is erected on the tower. The fair in Hartenfels usually takes place on the first weekend in July.
Choirs, clubs etc.
The community is enriched by the music club, which has a large number of members, the Hartenfels volunteer fire brigade , the Möhnenverein with a men's ballet, and the church choir. The tennis club Hartenfels / Schenkelberg is also integrated into the club life.
