Arnold II of Isenburg (* around 1190 at Braunsberg Castle ; † November 5, 1259 in Montabaur ) was Archbishop and Elector of Trier from 1242 to 1259 .

Arnold II von Isenburg came from the family of Isenburg . His parents were Bruno von Isenburg and Theodora von Wied. In 1217 he became archdeacon and in 1228 cathedral provost in Trier . Arnold was elected Elector of Trier in 1242. The defeated candidate Rudolf von der Brücke received the regalia from King Konrad IV . A brief civil war broke out, which was quickly brought to an end on January 23, 1245 by Rudolf's resignation and recognition by Pope Innocent IV . Arnold subsequently stood up for the opposing kings Heinrich Raspe , Wilhelm of Holland and Alfonso X of Castile , which brought him a long-lasting dispute with their opponents. Despite protracted battles with robber knights , Arnold built castles and churches and fortified cities in Kurtrier. For example, he built Stolzenfels Castle on the Rhine near Koblenz from 1242 to 1259 as an Electoral Trier customs castle and began building Bischofstein Castle . In the middle of the 13th century, he surrounded Münstermaifeld and Koblenz and had it partially surrounded by a wall ( Monasterium oppidum in Meynevelt circumvallavit, et in parte murari fecit ).

From 1246 to 1248 he besieged the Palatine Castle Thurant and finally conquered it with the help of the Archbishop of Cologne.

With that he finally ousted the Count Palatine from the Moselle and decisively expanded the Trier territory.

Arnold II von Isenburg is buried in Trier Cathedral .
