Third crusade
- May 7th : In the Third Crusade , an advance guard of the crusaders under Frederick VI defeated. from Swabia an army of the Rum Seljuks in the battle of Philomelion .
- May 18 : The Roman-German Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa defeats the army of Sultan Kiliç Arslan II at Iconium and takes Iconium , his capital .
- June: Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa and his army reach the allied kingdom of Lesser Armenia , but drowns there while crossing the Saleph River .
- July: Richard I the Lionheart of England and Philip II August of France set off with their armies by sea for the Third Crusade. They winter in Sicily .
- October: Siege of Acre : Remnants of Frederick I Barbarossa's army reach the besieged city of Acre .
- October 4th : Richard I the Lionheart conquers the Sicilian city of Messina .
