Dietrich II of Montfaucon

Dietrich II of Montfaucon , also of Montbéliard ( French Thierry , Latin Theodericus , * around 1130; † November 15, 1190 before Acre ), was Archbishop of Besançon from 1181 to 1190 .

He was a younger son of Richard II, Lord of Montfaucon , and Sophia of Montbéliard († 1148). His older brother Amadeus inherited the dominion of Montfaucon from his father and the county of Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) through his mother . Dietrich embarked on a spiritual career. His great-great-uncle, Hugo II of Montfaucon, was Archbishop of Besançon from 1067-1085. Dietrich was first canon , then archdeacon in St. Stephan zu Besançon, before he was elected Archbishop of Besançon in 1181.

He participated in 1189 together with Count Ludwig II von Pfirt in the army of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa in the Third Crusade . Unlike the count and the emperor, Dietrich reached the Holy Land. There he died of an illness on November 15, 1190 during the siege of Acre .
