Florens III. (Holland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Florens III. von Holland (also Floris , * around 1138 ; † August 1, 1190 in Antioch ) was the son of Count Dietrich VI. von Holland and Sophie von Salm-Rheineck , daughter of Count Palatine Otto I.

Life

Florens III. was a loyal supporter of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa . This granted him the important duties to Geervliet on the Rhine and Maas mouths (1179) and awarded him the title of imperial prince (1177). Florens succeeded his father in government in 1157. From now on he carried the title "Graaf van Holland". Since he was a supporter of the Staufer , he achieved a powerful position on the Lower Rhine and was at times considered a respected prince of this area. During his reign the war with Flanders over the Zeeland area began . He had to recognize the Flemish suzerainty for this area in the Treaty of Bruges in 1167 . In 1168 he was captured by Flanders and had to become a vassal for Zeeland . This gave rise to the centuries-old disputes between the two countries. He maintained Dutch influence in Friesland and the Diocese of Utrecht , especially through the benevolence of his episcopal brother.

Together with his son Wilhelm, he accompanied the emperor on the Third Crusade in 1189 and died of an epidemic, possibly of malaria, in Antioch .

He married in 1161/62 Adelheid von Huntingdon († January 11, around 1208), daughter of Prince Henry of Scotland .

Nine children were born from this marriage:

  • Dietrich VII. (* Around 1164, † 1203)
  • Heinrich
  • Floris Provost of Utrecht († November 30, 1210)
  • Wilhelm I. (* around 1165, † February 4, 1223)
  • Adelheid (* around 1163, † after 1205)
  • Sophia
  • Margarete († after 1203)
  • Elisabeth († young)
  • Agnes, abbess of Rijnsburg (* 1205, † 1228)
  • Boudewijn († around 1204)
