Gottfried III. (Lions)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried III. († August 11 or 21, 1190 ) was from 1142 Count von Löwen , Landgrave of Brabant , (as Gottfried VIII) Duke of Lower Lorraine and Margrave of Antwerp .

Life

He was the son of Gottfried II and Luitgard von Sulzbach. When his father died he was still a child, which led some Brabant vassals to gain independence for themselves (Wars of Grimbergen ). The dispute ended with the Grimbergen moth burning down in 1159.

On March 30, 1147, Gottfried took part in the coronation of Heinrich-Berengar , the son of Conrad III. in Aachen . In 1148 the war broke out again - after Konrad left for the Second Crusade - which was only ended with the election of Konrad's successor Friedrich Barbarossa . His marriage to Margarete, the daughter of Henry II of Limburg , his father's former opponent, allied Gottfried the most powerful families in the region.

In 1171 he was defeated in a war against the Count of Hainaut . In 1179 he married his son Henry I to a niece of Philip of Alsace , the Count of Flanders .

From 1182 to 1184 Gottfried was on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem . In the meantime, Friedrich Barbarossa named his son Duke of Brabant on his behalf. In September 1190, the title of duke was transferred to his son at the Reichstag from Schwäbisch Hall .
