  • 1706 : An earthquake occurs in the Sulmona area in Abruzzo , causing damage to property and more than a thousand deaths.
1893: The burning freighter Cabo Machichaco
  • 1893 : In the port of Santander , the freighter Cabo Machichaco , which was also loaded with dynamite, exploded after a fire broke out on board. The explosion triggers an earthquake, which can still be detected eight kilometers away. 590 people die, 525 are injured.
  • 1966 : Cyclones in the Bay of Bengal claim more than 1,000 lives.
  • 1982 : The collision of a tank truck with a Soviet military truck traveling in a convoy leads to an explosion in the 2.7 km long Salang tunnel north of Kabul in Afghanistan and the death of possibly more than 2,000 people.
