The 1908 presidential election in the United States took place on November 3, 1908 . The popular incumbent president, Theodore Roosevelt , kept his promise and did not run for a third term, and convinced Republicans to nominate William Howard Taft , who was a close friend of his. After the Democrats suffered a major defeat in the 1904 election with a Conservative candidate, they nominated William Jennings Bryan , who had already run against the Republican William McKinley in the elections of 1896 and 1900 , but had lost both elections. Despite everything, Bryan could not prevail against Taft and suffered an even worse defeat than in his two previous candidacies. He won only 162 electoral votes, while Taft received 321 electoral votes.
