The 7th presidential election in the United States took place in 1812. Acting President James Madison was confirmed and won against DeWitt Clinton , the Federalist candidate. The election was influenced by the British-American War that broke out in June 1812 .
Candidates
For the Democratic Republican Party , James Madison joined Elbridge Gerry . The Federalists did not nominate a candidate and instead supported Democratic Republican DeWitt Clinton (nephew of George Clinton ) with Jared Ingersoll as a running mate, who spoke out against the upcoming British-American War and against James Madison. Nonetheless, the federalist Rufus King , who had not been able to get the party to put up its own candidate at the party congress, ran for election in order to get at least one real federalist into the election.
