The 8th election of the President of the United States took place in 1816. James Monroe of the Democratic Republican Party won against his federal competitor Rufus King and James Monroe became the 5th president.
Candidates
The Democratic Republican Party nominated James Monroe and Daniel D. Tompkins . The federalists supported the New York Senator Rufus King , who had no chance after the ultimately successful British-American War and was to become the last candidate in the history of the federalists. Several ran for Vice President, including John Eager Howard and James Ross .
