President of the United States

The sixth election of the President of the United States took place in 1808. James Madison beat Charles Cotesworth Pinckney by a huge margin to become the 4th President of the United States.

Candidates

The Democratic Republican Party nominated former Secretary of State James Madison, supported by Thomas Jefferson , and incumbent Vice President George Clinton as its running mate. George Clinton actually ran for president. Even James Monroe had applied unsuccessfully and withdrew his candidacy, nominated by a group of Democratic Republican of Virginia, not back, but caused no campaign against Madison.

For the federalists , Charles Pinckney went into the race again with Rufus King .

Six electors from New York voted faithless , that is, against their voting mandate . They refused to vote Madison and voted for George Clinton. Madison won anyway, so the process was ignored.
