President of the United States

The 43rd election of the President of the United States took place on November 6, 1956 . The incumbent President Dwight D. Eisenhower won over his challenger Adlai Stevenson II .

Candidates

Eisenhower was nominated as incumbent by the Republicans without any problems. Richard Nixon remained his vice-president , although this was controversial within the party. Stevenson, who had already lost to Eisenhower in 1952, had to actively seek the Democratic nomination this time (in 1952 he had been called upon by the party) and was only able to prevail against Senator Estes Kefauver after a few setbacks . He did not determine his running mate himself, but had him chosen by the party congress . Kefauver won just ahead of Senator John F. Kennedy , whose unexpectedly strong performance was considered the real surprise of the party congress.
