The Socialist Labor Party of America is the oldest socialist political party in the United States . It was founded in 1876. The central office has been closed since 2008 and the party is largely no longer active.

history

The party was founded in 1876 as the Workingmen's Party of America , from 1877 it was called the Socialistic Labor Party until the 1880s. Daniel De Leon quickly became one of the party's leaders and editor of the party's organ The People . Through his leadership, he contributed to the fact that the SLP became a restructured national organization. On the other hand, the SLP was increasingly shaped by communism , so that liberal-moderate party members like Charles Sotheran were excluded from the party because of their views . In 1899 a breakaway faction left the SLP and formed a new movement that in 1901 gave rise to the Socialist Party of America, founded by Eugene V. Debs . In the following period there was a decline in the number of members and the reputation of the SLP.

De Leon's views formed the basis of the De Leonism advocated by the Socialist Labor Party of America . The party regularly ran candidates for public office such as the presidential election, but mostly without great success. In 1976 she was the last candidate for the US presidency. The central office has been closed since 2008.
