history
The monastery was founded in the 11th century on a peninsula in a castle settlement. The exact circumstances are unknown, the alleged charter of 1065 was a forgery of the 12th century.
A monumental three-aisled basilica with crypts, which was one of the largest in Poland at the time, was built in the 11th century . In the late 13th century, a renovation took place, which was completed in the 14th to 16th centuries.
Mogilno Abbey was the most important monastery in Greater Poland . It owned extensive land, also in other parts of the country (near Kolberg ), and several priories ( St. Adalbert near Danzig).
In 1499 the monastery burned down in a town fire and was then rebuilt. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Archbishops of Gniezno took their seat in the monastery and were also its abbots.
After the area passed to the Kingdom of Prussia , the admission of new novices was prohibited in 1816. In 1833 the monastery was closed.
The church of St. John became a parish church. The monastery buildings were used as a school and since 1880 as a hospital after renovations. After 1945 the monastery was owned by the state.
Capuchin monks have lived there since 2014 and run a European meeting center Wojciech - Adalbert .
