In the US presidential election of 1860 , Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th President of the United States of America . He was the first from the ranks of the Republican Party . The Vice President elected with him was Hannibal Hamlin .
There were four major candidates for the post of the President: Abraham Lincoln , who took for the Republicans, John Cabell Breckinridge for the Democrats of the South (Southern Democratic), Stephen Arnold Douglas for the Democrats of the Northern states (Northern Democratic) and John Bell for Constitutional Union formed from the Whigs .
Since the Republicans were in favor of the abolition of slavery , 11 southern states declared their independence in the months after the election and formed the Confederate States . This led to the war of secession (civil war).
