Karnak King List

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The King List of Karnak is a representation of ancient Egyptian kings ( pharaohs ) in the Temple of Amun in Karnak .

Structure and content

The king's table shows Thutmose III. standing as he sacrifices in front of 61 seated kings. The name cartouche is listed next to each king depicted. The text says:

“King Men-cheper-re (Thutmose III), to whom life, duration, power and health were given like Re for ever. Carrying out a hetep-di-nisut- offering ("a sacrifice that the king gives") for the kings of Upper and Lower Egypt. "

- King's table Thutmose III. from Karnak

This representation is probably not a list of kings in the narrower sense, but the depiction of statues of kings, Thutmose III. found during the renovation of the temple and deposited in other places. The list is not in chronological order, but is of some importance as it names rulers of the First and Second Intermediate Periods, which are not included in any other king list.
