Jürgen von Beckerath

Jürgen Rudolf Friedrich von Beckerath (born February 19, 1920 in Hanover ; † June 26, 2016 in Schlehdorf ) was a German Egyptologist and professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

Life

Jürgen von Beckerath went to school in the Höchst district of Frankfurt am Main and passed his Abitur there in 1939. During the Second World War he was initially a soldier, but was discharged from service after being wounded.

After the Second World War he began studying Egyptology in Munich and received his doctorate in 1950. Seven years later, in 1957, he became a lecturer at the same university and in 1963 became a private lecturer at the University of Munich. In 1966 and 1967 he was visiting professor at Columbia University in New York , but declined an appointment there. In 1970 he became a full professor ( professor ) and Institute Director at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Munster, where he 1985 emeritus was. Since then he has published numerous scientific works.

Von Beckerath lived with his wife Irmgard in Schlehdorf am Kochelsee in Upper Bavaria until his death .

meaning

Jürgen von Beckerath's most important works are the Handbook of Egyptian King Names ( Lit .: MÄS 49) and the Chronology of Pharaonic Egypt ( Lit .: MÄS 46). Today they are among the standard works of Egyptology.

His scientifically most important and influential work is his investigation into the Second Intermediate Period , with which he completed his habilitation.
