Bert Jansch (2007)

Bert Jansch (* 3. November 1943 in Glasgow , † 5. October 2011 in London ) was a British folk - singer and - guitarist .

Life

After initially traveling around Europe for a while, Jansch settled in London in the early 1960s , where he made a name for himself in the local folk scene. Anne Briggs helped him get a record deal with Transatlantic Records , and in 1965 Jansch's debut album Bert Jansch was released , which attracted folk fans across the UK. From a musical history point of view, it is interesting that Jansch exercised a technical influence that should not be underestimated, both on folk musicians such as Nick Drake and Donovan, and on the founder of the pioneering hard rock formation Led Zeppelin , Jimmy Page . Neil Young compared Jansch's importance to the acoustic guitar with the importance of Jimi Hendrix to the electric guitar. In the same year his second solo album It Don't Bother Me was released , on which John Renbourn also played. Jansch and Renbourn then formed a duo and published Bert and John in 1966 .

After Jansch had recorded a third solo album called Jack Orion in the same year , he founded the folk-jazz band Pentangle with Renbourn . In addition to his work at Pentangle, Jansch released a large number of solo albums, even after the band split in 1973. In the 1980s, Jansch participated in a reunion of Pentangle, and until 2006 albums from him were regularly on the market.

In 2011 Jansch was ranked 94th on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists (as of May 1, 2011).

Jansch died on October 5th, 2011 after suffering from cancer for many years.
