Rosa Alarco Larrabure

Rosa Alarco Larrabure (born November 3, 1911 in Lima ; † 1980 ) was a Peruvian musicologist, composer and choir director.

Alarco studied music theory and piano at the Academia Sas-Rosay and composition with Rodolfo Holzmann . She attended the Conservatorio Nacional de Música de Perú and the Conservatorio Nacional de Música de Chile , studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and in Santiago de Compostela and attended master classes by María Urreta, Clayton Krehbel, Fernando García and Axel Hesse. Her academic interest was in the culture and music of the indigenous peoples of America.

In 1946 she became a professor of music with responsibility for training music teachers for state schools. In 1954 she took over the founding and management of the choir of the Universidad de San Marcos , subsequently heading the musicology section of this university. During this time she also composed works such as El Molino for mixed choir, a trio for clarinet, viola and cello, as well as arrangements and her own settings of folk tunes (including Canciones infantiles and La jarra de oro ). In 1966 she published Canciones sobre temas peruanos para coro mixto . For the biography Vida y obra de Alfonso de Silva (1979) she was awarded the Premio Casa de las Américas .
