Alfonso de Silva

Alfonso de Silva (born December 22, 1902 in Callao , † May 7, 1937 in Lima ) was a Peruvian composer . De Silva studied at the Lima Music Academy with Federico Gerdes and at the Conservatory of Madrid with Conrado del Campo y Zabaleta .

From 1921 to 1923 he stayed in Paris, where he met writers such as César Vallejo and César Moro . From here he wrote numerous letters to the critic Carlos Raygada , which appeared in 1975 under the title 101 cartas y una sola angustia with a foreword by Luis Alberto Sánchez .

In 1925 he traveled again to Paris with his wife, the singer Alina Lestonnat , and performed as a pianist in France, Belgium, Spain and Portugal. In 1928 he returned to Peru. After failing to get a hoped-for position at the conservatory, he joined the merchant navy and traveled the Pacific.

De Silva composed several orchestral pieces, string quartets and works for violin and piano and for piano solo as well as songs. A biography of de Silva by Rosa Alarco Larrabure was published in Cuba in 1981.
