Lengede miracle

The monument in Lengede

The place gained worldwide fame in the autumn of 1963 through the Lengede mine disaster . On October 24th, 129  miners were surprised in the Mathilde shaft when an above-ground mining clarification pond of 500,000 cubic meters of water broke. 86 miners rescued themselves on the same day. A rescue did not seem possible for the remaining 43. After eight days, three more miners were rescued. The miracle of Lengede describes the finding of still living buddies at a depth of 60 meters on November 3rd. The eleven men held out underground for four more days before they could be rescued with a Dahlbusch bomb . There was no salvation for 29 buddies.

The event was filmed twice with the title “The Miracle of Lengede”, in 1969 ( film from 1969 ) directed by Rudolf Jugert and in 2003 ( film from 2003 ) directed by Kaspar Heidelbach . In addition, in 2003 the WDR produced the documentary "The Lengede Drama, Protocol of a Catastrophe" , directed by Frank Bürgin .

Incorporations

On July 1, 1972, as part of the regional reform in Lower Saxony, the until then independent municipalities Barbecke, Broistedt, Klein Lafferde, Lengede and Woltwiesche were combined to form the newly created unified municipality Lengede. The incorporated communities of Barbecke, Broistedt and Woltwiesche did not previously belong to the Peine district, but to the Wolfenbüttel district .
