Ribemont is a French commune with 1,982 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Quentin .
geography
The city is located on the left bank of the River Oise and on the parallel Sambre-Oise Canal , about 15 kilometers southeast of Saint-Quentin .
history
In the year 880 the Carolingian Ludwig the Younger ( Eastern Franconia ), Ludwig III met in Ribemont . and Karlmann ( West Franconia ) to sign the Treaty of Ribemont , with which the division of the Franconian Empire was established. A second Ribemont treaty was signed in 1178 when the sons of Duke Matthew I of Lorraine decided to divide the inheritance.
From the 11th century onwards, Ribemont was owned by the Counts of Ostervant and passed to the Moy family by marriage.
