Fonsomme is a commune in the French department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Quentin-2 in the arrondissement of Saint-Quentin . It borders on Fontaine-Uterte to the north -west , Croix-Fonsommes to the north, Étaves-et-Bocquiaux to the north-east, Fieulaine to the east, Fontaine-Notre-Dame to the south-east, Homblières to the south-west and Essigny-le to the west -Petit . In addition to the main settlement, Fonsomme also includes the hamlets of Fonsommes, Courcelles, Fervaques, La Motte, Le Bois Delvigne, Le Boyau, Le Grand Bois, Le Grand Royard and Le Moulin .

history

The place name comes from the Latin word "Fons" - that means source (here: the Somme ). The Cistercian Abbey of Fervaques was founded there around 1140 by the Cistercian Abbey of Montreuil-les-Dames . At this time the settlement was called "Fons somma". The monastery was located there until 1648 and then moved to Saint-Quentin .
