Aubencheul-aux-Bois is a French commune with 269 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Quentin and the canton of Bohain-en-Vermandois .

The municipality is located about halfway between Saint-Quentin and Cambrai on the border with the Nord department .

history

Aubencheul-aux-Bois, in the center of the Arrouaise forest, was the seat of a small abbey founded in the 11th century. The place was sacked by Alessandro Farnese in 1584 and by the Spanish in 1636 . A fire destroyed 63 houses in 1827. In the First World War Aubencheul was almost completely destroyed.
