history
During the First World War , the place was occupied by German troops from August 28, 1914 to October 1918. During this time, Montbrehain was removed from the immediate front line and served as a base for the German army. In September 1918, the Allies launched an offensive against the Germans on the Péronne front . After the collapse of the Hindenburg Line , the 6th Brigade of the Australian Imperial Forces succeeded in taking Montbrehain on October 5, 1918. Six civilians who did not allow themselves to be evacuated were killed in their homes during the fighting. On October 6, 1918, the 30th US Division moved its headquarters to Montbrehain.
In view of the suffering of the population during the four years of occupation and the severe damage to the buildings, the place was awarded the Croix de Guerre 1914–1918 on October 17, 1920 .
From 1900 to 1950 Montbrehain was on the 1951 disused railway line from Le Catelet to Guise .
