history
Like many other villages in the area, Pontruet was completely destroyed in the First World War.
On August 28, 1914, German troops reached the place. At that time the front was about 20 kilometers west of Péronne . The Germans confiscated the houses in the village to accommodate their own troops. The residents were only entitled to a single room. Orders from the commandant's office obliged the population, under threat of sanctions, to provide wheat, eggs, milk, meat and vegetables for the soldiers at the front on a fixed date.
In February 1917, the residents of Pontruet were evacuated in cattle wagons by train to Saint-Quentin and occupied territories in Belgium. The village initially remained occupied by the Germans. It was not until September 18, 1918, that Pontruet was finally captured by the 24th British Division .
Of the 390 inhabitants before the war, only 188 had returned to Pontruet by 1921.
