history
Like many other villages in the area, Vendelles was completely destroyed in the First World War.
On August 28, 1914, German troops reached the place they held until March 1917. The front was at that time about twenty kilometers west of Péronne . The Germans confiscated the houses in the village to accommodate their own troops. The residents were only entitled to a single room. Orders from the commandant's office obliged the population, under threat of sanctions, to provide wheat, eggs, milk, meat and vegetables for the soldiers at the front on a fixed date.
In February 1917, the German troops withdrew as part of the " Alberich Company ". On February 15, the residents of Vendelle were evacuated in cattle wagons by train to Saint-Quentin and occupied Belgian territories. Before the Germans withdrew in March 1917, the houses were looted and the village systematically destroyed. The buildings were blown up and all trees were sawed off at a height of one meter. On March 31, 1917, Vendelles was captured by British troops after hard fighting.
After the armistice, of the 223 inhabitants before the war until 1921, only 109 returned to Vendelles.
