history
Like many other villages in the area, Le Verguier was completely destroyed in the First World War.
On August 28, 1914, German troops reached the place they held until March 1917. The front was at that time about twenty kilometers west of Péronne . The Germans confiscated the houses in the village to accommodate their own troops. The residents were only entitled to a single room. Orders from the commandant's office obliged the population, under threat of sanctions, to provide wheat, eggs, milk, meat and vegetables for the soldiers at the front on a fixed date. In February 1917 the German troops withdrew.
On February 15, the residents of Le Verguier were evacuated in cattle wagons by train to Saint-Quentin and occupied territories in Belgium. Before the withdrawal of the German troops in March 1917, the houses were looted and the village systematically destroyed. The buildings were blown up and the trees sawed off at a height of one meter.
On March 31, 1917, Le Verguiers was captured by British troops after hard fighting.
