Vermand is a French commune with 1,092 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the Aisne department in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Quentin and the canton of Saint-Quentin-1 (until 2015: canton of Vermand ). The inhabitants are called Vermandois .
geography
Vermand is located about eleven kilometers west-northwest of Saint-Quentin on the Omignon . Vermand is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Vendelles in the north, Maissemy in the east, Holnon in the south-east, Attilly in the south, Caulaincourt in the west and south-west, Pœuilly in the west and Bernes in the north-west.
history
There is evidence of a settlement since the Neolithic. The Celtic tribe of the Viromandu founded their main town here. Later the Romans moved this settlement to the southeast and founded the Augusta Viromanduorum (today's Saint-Quentin). With the end of the Gallic War, 52 BC, the Viromandu tribe had largely passed into the surrounding peoples.
